Perlite use in horticulture

Perligran as a mineral aggregate in professional horticulture
Perligran horticultural perlite is an ideal soil amendment and general horticultural medium which helps the mineral improvement of professional potting substrates. Mixing Perligran into these potting substrates can result in optimal aeration, better water retention, higher water capacity, improved drainage and structural stability. A potting soil mixed with Perligran is a perfect medium for plants which need an aired substrate as a basis for optimal root growth, for example, roses, poinsettia, anthurium and gerbera.

Perligran for landscaping and golf courses
Perligran is used in landscaping to improve problematic planting sites/soils. Where soils or lawns are heavy and clay-based with less air capacity, the addition of Perligran will improve drainage and aeration and result in a crumblier structure which enables plant roots to flourish.

Conversely, where soils are dry and sandy, the addition of Perligran will help to give them a higher water capacity. As a result, no irrigation is required and damage from drying-out can be avoided.

Perligran horticultural perlite can also be used for greens on newly-built golf courses where it enables the grass roots to anchor themselves in the soil.

Perligran for hydroponic crops
As a light, chemically inert and nutrient-free substrate, Perligran has excellent physical properties for hydroponic systems used for professional vegetable and cut flower production. It can be used as a replacement for soil or peat substrates, both as a seed starter and as a rooting medium. When using a hydroponic system with pure perlite, water and nutrients can be supplied via automatic fertilisation in a controlled manner.

Knauf Perlite offers a special hydroponic product (2 times sieved perlite, 2-6 mm,) which is completely free from fine particles and dust. Use of this product gives optimal results when growing anthurium, roses, gerbera or orchids.

Perligran is classified as a soil additive (in the sense of the EU Fertiliser Regulation). Therefore, it can be spread on agricultural fields without any adverse effects after the hydroponic crop has been harvested.

Perligran horticultural perlite from Knauf Perlite carries the RHP quality mark. This certification from the Dutch RHP Foundation means it satisfies the highest chemical and physical requirements, if free from pathogenic germs, and guarantees a safe and reliable application for the grower.

Perligran has a positive effect on soil quality in many ways:
  • Provides better aeration of the soil – gas exchange is assured
  • Increases water retention of the soil, thus enabling it to endure dry periods more effectively
  • Improves root formation in new plants
  • Increases soil granularity, thus increasing soil life
  • Optimises soil remoisturisation in a sustainable manner
